Curiosity of the Day: Five of Wands

Competition, uncertainty, internal conflict, unexpected advantage or turn of event, these are the words commonly associate with the Five of Wands when it is upright. It acts as a warning that we need to be cautious with those around us, especially when we already sense some “in-fighting” going on at work or in our private lives. It could also mean conflicts within ourselves, for example, we could be in contention of which goals to pursue or whether to pursue those goals at all. This part certainly speaks to me, and I have been having some stagnation in productivity resulting from this contention.

The Suit of Wands stands for initiatives and represents the Fire element, Five of Wands is certainly the essence of this energy: the human will. Our wills are made up by our conscious deeds and unconscious intentions. The 12 lances from those 8 lance bearers and the 5 wands each represents a type of action and motive, it’s essential that we gather up the energy, sought through the motives and focus our actions on something that’s worthwhile.

Everyday we can feel overrun by all sorts of thoughts, options, opinions and tendencies, different parties and interests are constantly pulling us from different directions, the most important task here, is to figure out what has the first priority, and, if possible, how can several goals be achieved at the same time?

The red cloudy figure in the middle of the card can be interpreted as our personal fire, our energy, we should never spread our energies too thin. Centre ourselves, find out which aspects of our will are in harmony with our desires, which aspects are actually no longer relevant or were never so.

Create some space in our daily routines, this might mean different things to different individuals, it can be letting people or things go, setting boundaries, taking a time out or break. Dali’s infamous butterflies signal changes and transitions, even rebirth. New alternatives are waiting to be explored in both our personal lives and careers.
